When to visit Byron Bay, honestly
January is the worst month to come and the most expensive. Here is what each part of the year actually looks like.
Byron Bay, New South Wales
A small hotel on the ridge, six minutes' walk from seven kilometres of empty sand. A dining room that seats forty. No conference facilities, no lobby music.
The house
Kestrel House sits at the top of Tallow Ridge Road, where the sealed road ends and the reserve begins. It was built as a hotel rather than converted into one, which is why the rooms are quiet and the walls are thick.
There are twenty-two rooms across three floors, a dining room called Tallow on the ground floor, and a lap pool cut into the slope on the northern side. The nearest neighbour is four hundred metres away.
Rooms
The smallest rooms in the house, facing back into the pandanus and the ridge. Quiet, dark at night, and the best value in the building.
East-facing, with a partial view down the escarpment to Tallow Beach. Sunrise arrives early and unannounced.
Corner suites on the top floor with a separate sitting area and an uninterrupted line down the beach to the cape.
One loft, under the roof, with two bedrooms and a kitchen. Booked months ahead over summer.
Dining
Forty seats, one room, a menu that changes when the produce does. Open to non-residents for dinner Wednesday to Sunday.

Ballina is closer, Gold Coast is cheaper, and Brisbane is neither. What each one actually costs in time.
Tallow is not a patrolled beach for most of its length. Where to swim, and where not to.
Common questions
Six minutes on foot, down the track at the end of Tallow Ridge Road. Byron Bay township is eight minutes by car.
April to June and September to November are the two shoulder seasons — dry, mild, and roughly a third below peak rates. January is the busiest and most expensive month.
Ballina Byron Gateway (BNK) is 35 minutes away. Gold Coast (OOL) is 55 minutes and has more flights. Brisbane is a two-and-a-quarter hour drive.
Yes. Tallow is the ground-floor dining room, forty seats, open for dinner Wednesday to Sunday and to house guests for breakfast daily.
